Basaltra · Project in development
Developing a new ground-support system.
Basaltra is developing an integrated ground-support system for paving, walkways and other light-load areas. The concept combines a honeycomb frame with mineral fill derived from Icelandic volcanic materials, bringing structural design and material development together in one construction system.

Rotate the model, separate its layers and explore the frame, fill and paving.
The 3D viewer needs a browser with WebGL support. The illustrations below explain the concept if the model cannot load.

The concept pathway
Mineral materials. One integrated system.
Basaltra explores a honeycomb frame and mineral fill working together beneath paving and other light-load areas.
Concept under development. Preliminary fill mixtures exist; the frame and integrated prototype remain to be built and tested. Frame geometry and base layers are illustrative.
Select minerals
Explore Icelandic volcanic materials with selected binders and aggregates.
Develop the fill
Study how the ingredients work together. Preliminary fill mixtures have been developed.
Combine frame and fill
Develop a honeycomb frame that works with the mineral fill as one system.
Explore ground uses
Study the assembly for paving, walkways and light-load areas on a properly designed base.
Test the system
Build and assess an integrated prototype for load, water and freeze–thaw performance.
The research opportunity
The project explores how the frame and mineral fill can function together as an integrated system for practical ground applications. Its research focus extends beyond the fill material itself to the design, manufacture and performance of the complete assembly. Lower-carbon construction is the wider objective.
Development stage
Exploratory fill mixtures have been developed. The honeycomb frame and integrated prototype remain to be built, and standardised testing is planned. The next stages are intended to examine the system as a whole and establish evidence for its suitability in the proposed applications.
Surefni’s role
Surefni is the project applicant, bringing Basaltra into its research and development portfolio alongside its climate project advisory work. The programme connects early materials research with the development of a practical construction concept.
Research support
Earlier development has received support through Rannís FRÆ and Iceland’s Climate and Energy Fund. The 2025 Climate and Energy Fund award lists Surefni and EFLA for Basaltra.
