The Next Generation of Climate Projects

At Súrefni Sustainability, we are actively involved in the development and advisory work of climate projects across multiple sectors and geographies. From carbon removal and afforestation to industrial decarbonization and agricultural methane reduction, these initiatives reflect the growing diversity of climate solutions being developed under internationally recognized carbon standards.

SeaChar: Turning Marine Biomass into Carbon Removal

SeaChar is an innovative carbon removal initiative focused on converting sustainably sourced marine biomass into biochar through pyrolysis. The project aims to create durable carbon storage while generating useful co-products that can support soil health and circular resource use.

SeaChar received support from the Icelandic Energy and Climate Fund (Orku- og loftslagssjóðurinn) during the 2025 funding round.

Basaltra Lower-Carbon Construction Materials

Basaltra is developing a next-generation low-carbon construction material designed to significantly reduce emissions associated with traditional cement and concrete production. By utilizing alternative mineral resources and innovative material science, the project seeks to provide practical decarbonization solutions for the construction sector.

The project received support from the Icelandic Energy and Climate Fund in the 2025 funding round as well as funding from Rannís, the Icelandic Centre for Research. Research and development activities have also been supported by EFLA Consulting Engineers.

Agricultural Methane Reduction in Santa Catarina, Brazil

In southern Brazil, a methane reduction project is currently being developed for livestock farming operations in the state of Santa Catarina. The project focuses on capturing methane emissions from manure management systems and converting them into useful energy, reducing greenhouse gas emissions while improving operational efficiency and supporting circular economy principles.

The project is being developed with the objective of future certification under an internationally recognized carbon standard.

2025-start afforestation project

Súrefni Sustainability is currently providing carbon project development and advisory services for a medium- to large-scale afforestation initiative located across multiple sites in southwest Iceland. Structured as a grouped project with staggered planting schedules, implementation began in 2025 and will continue over multiple planting seasons.

Once fully implemented, the initiative is expected to cover several thousand hectares. The work includes carbon accounting, project design, monitoring systems, eligibility assessments, and alignment with internationally recognized forestry methodologies and standards, including Verra.

The climate transition will require a broad portfolio of solutions rather than a single technology or approach. Through project development, sustainability advisory services, and carbon market expertise, Súrefni Sustainability continues to support the creation of credible, measurable, and scalable climate projects across multiple sectors.
